During the Renaissance a great interest in the occult emerged. Since the Roman Catholic Church hoards all their occult and satanic books of magick they felt this was a threat to their power.
Leonardo Da Vinci created the famous “Pentagram of Man” in which the pentagram symbolism details the 5 limbs (left and right hand – and foot of the path) and head. While the occultist scientist got away with this diagram other occultists were not so lucky. The use of Tarot cards was considered witchcraft which was of course punishable by death in every Country in which the Roman Catholic Church existed.
In order to hide the tarot cards a deck of “Spanish playing cards” was created using all the same suites of tarot cards that consisted of the entire minor arcania of a tarot deck. Games were created to hide the fact these were tarot cards. However the Roman Catholic Church caught on quickly.
Therefore a new deck was established which is the standard playing deck of today. This deck transformed the tarot suites using new symbolism. Hearts were cups, Diamonds were coins / pentacles, spades were swords and clubs were wands. The implications were easy enough to figure out. In addition to this one card was missing, the pages, because Jacks were knights.
Additional games were created using multiple systems including gambling and mere entertainment some involving sheer luck and others involving skill.
Since so many people were using the cards with no idea of their secret meaning the new system was successful and the Roman Catholic Church was unable to assassinate people, because they really could not tell the difference between the actual tarot users and the people merely playing a game with the cards.
